Why Real Food

Why do I want to take this journey? This is the question my husband asked me last night.  I quickly answered him, “because it’s unhealthy not to”.  Later that night I sat there really thinking about the answer to this question, why do I want to take the real food plunge?

I want to live a healthier life, so that I can be fit and productive.  I feel that this in turn will help me be a better mother.  I strongly believe that I cannot properly take care of my son if I am not taking care of myself; I need to be healthy and full of energy in order to spend the quality time with him that he deserves.
I want my son to eat healthier so I need to start setting a better example for him.  I have the PICKIEST EATER ever.  He would easily go an entire day without eating just to avoid taking a bite of something new.  I hate this, but we can’t seem to get past this phase with him.  And unfortunately the few things he does like are by no mean healthy real food options.  Part of my goal is to create healthy alternatives to the unhealthy foods my son currently enjoys.

Sitting there and thinking about the reasons why I want to do this has made me even more excited and determined to change our ways and succeed in turning our life style around.

  1. Hi Andrea,
I am so excited you are deciding to take the journey. I can completely relate to the picky eater thing. My two oldest children have always been good eaters but my youngest is Ms. Picky. I have to tell you though, she is changing. Her taste buds are developing a taste for healthy food. It's taken some time (6 months) but now I give her homemade peanut butter and she eats it instead of saying, " I don't like that kind of peanut butter!". We don't have snack foods in the house so when she want a snack she has to eat fruit, veggies or toast with honey. It's not always easy to get her to eat. Sometimes I have to say, "Well, this is what we are having for dinner. If you don't eat then you will go hungry". Sometimes if she really doesn't like it I will find something she does but sometimes she goes hungry. It seems that it is working though.
Kids have to develop a taste for these foods just like we do. So start slow and don't give up. The first items I decided to eliminate from our diet (as much as possible) was refined sugar and white flour. So maybe you can just start with that.
Also, husbands can be just as picky as kids. My husband didn't want to try our goats milk even though the rest of the house was drinking it. It took him a month to even try it. Now he loves it. ;)

  2. What a great post. I believe many of us who've begun this real food journey can relate. For me, it was what you said, "I strongly believe that I cannot properly take care of my son if I am not taking care of myself; I need to be healthy and full of energy in order to spend the quality time with him that he deserves." While there were certainly other factors, this was definitely number one for me.
